What is PEP?
PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a short-term emergency treatment to reduce the risk of HIV infection after a possible exposure to the virus.
How it works
PEP involves taking a 28-day course of HIV medication within 72 hours after potential exposure. The sooner it is started the more effective it is. The medication works by stopping the virus from establishing an infection in the body.
How to access it
PEP is available free from the NHS. It is available from many sexual health clinics and A&E. If you require PEP out of normal working hours, please go straight to A&E.
