At Sahir, we understand that living with HIV can affect far more than someone’s physical health. Financial pressures, reduced mobility, unsuitable housing and social isolation can all make everyday life increasingly difficult.
That is why our support is always shaped around the individual.
One woman living with HIV who came to Sahir was also undergoing regular dialysis treatment. Her health conditions had significantly reduced her energy and mobility, making it difficult for her to leave home, complete everyday tasks or stay connected with her community.
As her independence declined, she was becoming increasingly isolated.
Finding a practical solution
Our HIV support team worked closely with her to understand what would make the greatest difference. Together, we identified that a mobility scooter could give her greater freedom and help her reconnect with the world around her.
Sahir supported her to find and visit a local mobility supplier, where she was able to choose a scooter that met her needs.
We also negotiated a 12-month interest-free payment plan with the supplier, helping to make the scooter financially manageable.
But our support did not stop there.
When it became clear that she could not easily move the scooter in and out of her home, a member of the Sahir team visited her property to assess the problem. We then referred her to Liverpool City Council’s Adult Care Service for an occupational therapist assessment, including consideration of whether a ramp could be provided.
Sahir also helped her arrange the safe disposal of clinical waste from her home and supported her with a review of her Universal Credit claim.
A renewed sense of freedom
She now has her mobility scooter and can travel independently for the first time in a long while.
This has already helped her rebuild social connections, engage more fully with her community and regain a sense of freedom and control over her life. She told us how pleased she was with the support she had received and is now waiting for an occupational therapist assessment to improve access to her home further.
This is what Sahir’s work looks like.
It is listening to someone, understanding the barriers they face and staying alongside them until practical solutions can be found. It is advocacy, persistence and compassionate support tailored to the whole person—not simply their HIV status.
